It is very common for golf cart disc brakes to develop surface or “flash rust” and make noise, especially after sitting, in humid, or rainy conditions. The iron rotors oxidize quickly, but this is usually harmless surface rust that scrubs off within a few braking applications.
Key Details
- Cause – moisture from dew, rain, or washing the cart causes oxidation on the unfinished metal surfaces of the rotors.
- Noise – the initial, often loud, scraping or grinding noise is the brake pad scraping this rust off.
- Solution – simply driving and applying the brakes a few times will remove the rust and silence the noise.
