Annually is a good average service interval, but it depends on the make, model, and year and usage. Newer cars, lithium models, and light recreational home use all can lead to less required service and can possibly extend the service interval to 18 months.

Lead-acid batteries need distilled water added over time as the water level decreases. The level should cover the plates but should be about 1” below the very top of the battery or kept at or below the fill line. Always water batteries after charging.
